Micron Technology said it has broken ground on an advanced wafer fabrication facility in Singapore, marking the start of a planned investment of about $24 billion over the next decade. The company framed the buildout as a response to long-term growth in memory and storage demand, particularly as artificial intelligence and data-centric computing increase the need for high-performance NAND and related technologies.

What Micron is building and when output begins

The new facility is located within Micron’s existing NAND manufacturing complex in Singapore and is designed to scale over time. Micron said wafer output is scheduled to begin in the second half of calendar 2028, a timeline that positions the expansion as a medium-term capacity addition rather than an immediate supply fix.

Micron also emphasized Singapore’s role in its global network, describing the project as part of a strategy to improve supply chain resiliency and keep manufacturing closely aligned with research and development. The company highlighted the push toward smart manufacturing, including greater use of AI, advanced robotics, and automation inside the fab environment.

Jobs, ecosystem impact, and sustainability goals

Micron said the expansion is expected to create around 1,600 jobs tied to engineering and operations, with additional hiring linked to related investments at the same site. The company also said it intends for the facility to align with its sustainability commitments, including efficiency and emissions-reduction measures common to newer-generation semiconductor fabs.

The project arrives as the chip industry tries to balance two competing pressures: investing enough to meet AI-driven demand while avoiding the boom-bust dynamics that have historically hit memory markets when supply ramps too fast. Micron’s long runway and phased output schedule reflect that tension—and explain why the announcement was treated as both a growth signal and a disciplined-capex message to investors.
