FBI executes search warrant at Fulton County election office for 2020 records

Federal investigators executed a search warrant Wednesday at the Fulton County election office in Georgia, a county spokesperson said, in a move that immediately drew attention because of the county’s role in the bitter disputes that followed the 2020 presidential election. The FBI confirmed it was carrying out the warrant but declined to describe what prompted the search or who, if anyone, is under scrutiny.

Regina Waller, a spokeswoman for Fulton County, said the warrant sought multiple records connected to the 2020 election. She added that county officials were working to understand the nature of the search at the county’s election hub and operations center in south Fulton, about a half hour from downtown Atlanta. The FBI’s brief statement said the inquiry remains ongoing.

The search comes years after Fulton County became a focal point of false claims that ballots were mishandled or counted improperly in 2020. Donald Trump lost Georgia in that election, and allegations centered on Fulton—home to Atlanta—were repeatedly used to argue, without proof, that the outcome was tainted. One widely circulated claim about election workers supposedly pulling ballots from suitcases after counting ended was later debunked by state officials.

Those controversies have carried lasting legal consequences. One of Trump’s lawyers, Rudy Giuliani, was ordered to pay substantial damages to two election workers in a defamation case related to those allegations. Even so, Trump allies have continued to press claims that something improper happened in Fulton County, keeping the county’s election administration under an unusually intense spotlight.

In recent months, the federal government has also pursued its own legal actions tied to the 2020 election. The Justice Department’s civil rights division filed a lawsuit in December seeking to compel Fulton County to turn over ballots from the 2020 election, adding another layer of pressure on local officials and fueling a new round of political confrontation over records and oversight.

For now, officials have not disclosed what specific documents were taken, whether the search was focused on ballot materials, administrative communications, equipment data, or something else entirely. County leaders said they were cooperating while trying to clarify what the federal investigation is examining and why the warrant was issued at this time.

The development is likely to intensify debate over election administration in Georgia as the state continues to face scrutiny from national political actors. It also underscores how disputes from the 2020 election remain active in courts and politics, with federal law enforcement steps now intersecting directly with a local election office.
